Or it can be cut in mirror image and put on the underside of an acrylic board or glass. Chalkboard or whiteboard require a "front surface, straight forward" application. A clear glass or acrylic can have a "back surface or mirror image" application. Applying on the back allows for a smooth writing surface on the top.
