This is an antique Victorian buckle pin crafted sometime between 1840-1860. It was made to send a symbolic message. It was crafted during the Victorian Romantic Period when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert set the tone for sweet and sentimental gifts. It was a time when men actually courted women with poems, flowers and gifts of jewelry. Unfortunately, to remain virtuous, Victorian ladies were never alone with a man, propriety demanded a chaperone. To circumvent the pervasive inability to express feelings, gifts were sent laden with the symbolism of love. This buckle pin is an example of a message sent.
To the Victorians the buy belt/buckle is much like the serpent, it represents eternity, fidelity/loyalty, strength and protection. As the symbol curves around and threads back into itself, creating an eternal loop, it threads through the buckle and tightly overlaps itself. Essentially, the buckle/belt motif relates back to this unbreakable strength of upholding loyalty and in turn, memory forever. Its eternal loop is combined by its strength with which it holds up the virtue that it contains.
An entirely romantic symbol, perfect for the one you love.
The pin is a beautiful golden design, composed of classic Victorian bronze and a rolled gold overlay. The pin also has the finer detail of floral chase work around the frame of the design. The construction is highly detailed and quite realistic. It's as if you could actually unbuckle the belt!
This beautiful antique pin measures 1.20” and is in magnificent vintage condition.
