‘A Fox at Twilight' Original hand-pressed linoprint
“And that sweet city with her dreaming spires,
She needs not June for beauty's heightening,
...
Lovely all times she lies, lovely to-night!” -
Lines from Matthew Arnold's poem that describes describes Oxford and where it gets its pretty ‘dreaming spires' from. Below its lofty rooftops Oxford's streets and commercial facades change through the years yet its distinctive skyline of towers and pinnacles remain, looking much as it did many years ago.
Sometimes a buy benevolent fox flies over the gently sleeping city, its towers pointing the way, and thinks, just as in the poem; “Lovely all times she lies, lovely to-night!” before continuing his night flight through the road of stars.
