Taken from the "Charlotte" of France, and the French Revolutionary times, this style was again popular at the Turn of the Century, and if you access movies on TCM, you will see the shape. A mobcap would be somewhat like a shower cap shape to us, with ruffles that sat around the edge of a rounded structure. Think Bathing Beauties of the Gilded Age, and you'll get the picture. This little beauty is build around a wire construct, and is made of pink silk faille, trimmed with exquisite hand painted roses. Quite the find for the hat collector and historic re-enactor. One size fits all, as it doesn't go down on the head, but was designed to sit atop a victorian coiffure of hair.
The Charlotte nickname is taken from buy Charlotte Corday, the patriot who murdered Jean Marat, in his bath. See David, the painter for a visual reference.
