History: "True madam; those who have most virtue in their mouths, have least of it in their bosom." She Stoops to Conquer (Mistakes of a Night), is a play and comedy written by Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright and poet Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774). First performed in London in 1773. It is considered a comedy of manners and uses satire to depict divisions between city and country, rich and poor.
"I know of no comedy for many years that has so much exhilarated an audience that it has answered so much the great end of comedy – making an audience merry". Samuel Johnson
