buy Is the face of our Spejbl marionette familiar to you? Does his name ring a bell? No surprise! Spejbl is one of the best-known characters of the Czech marionette theatre scene. You may also know the other characters connected with him, as Hurvínek, Spejbl, Žeryk the dog or Missis Kateřina.
And for those who don't know him yet, here is some basic information about his origin. Spejbl was made by woodcarver Karel Nosek from Pilsen based on an artistic design of Professor Josef Skupa in 1919-1920. The exact date of Spejbl´s first showing on stage is unknown, but it took place in the autumn of 1920 in the Pilsen Puppet Theatre where Spejbl appeared as a gymnast on the trapeze as a partner to Kašpárek, a famous character popular with Pilsen audiences, in an encore to a children´s play.
Nowadays Spejbl is popular not only among the Czech children but also between their parents and grandparents.
