1865 buy Antique Handwritten Indenture - Genuine Old Manuscript - City of London, Ontario, Canada

This is an "indenture", an antique legal document dated May 23, 1865, involving a land leasing agreement between Andrew K. Thompson and John Cooke, both of the City of London in Middlesex, Ontario, Canada,

The document has eight pages, fastened together at the top left, with each page measuring approx. 14.25 inches x 9 inches. Even the staples on the top left are dated (February 1863) -- see first two photos. Any small tears in the document have not been repaired but have been left as is. This historical collectible document is in good condition, with folds and creases as befit the age and type of document.

Once upon a time, important documents were painstakingly handwritten. Any part that needed to be deleted simply had to be crossed out. "Bold" and "normal" fonts were made using different types of pen with thinner or thicker nibs. And all copies had to be made by hand as well.

This is one such document -- an "indenture", i.e., a legal contract. So buy called because most of them had an indented or wavy margin at the top as a safeguard to forgery. As was the practice at the time, the manuscript contains the heavily embellished words "This Indenture" at the top of the page.
