This is perhaps the most beautiful feather hat it's been our privilege to recommend -- ever. The feathers are undoubtedly from a number of different birds, and there's a rich iridescent color that shines forth from this hat under sunlight. The underlying cap is asymmetric, and the milliner is unknown, but given its union tag and some other hints, we think it was probably made by a designer in New York City sometime in the 1950s or 1960s. The underlying construction of the hat proper is a wool felt, with a rigid underwire at the edges. This would have been appropriate wear for formal occasions like weddings, but would also have been appropriate for more casual events, like garden parties, shopping downtown, or using the phrase "hoi polloi" in a sentence to indicate you are as sophisticated and elite as your hat makes buy you out to be.
Because it's asymmetric, moderately flexible, and sort of a "three-quarters capulet", circumference isn't really an informative measure. From side to side the hat measure 6" at the brim, and about 7.5" front to back. The depth of the hat measures anywhere from 3" to 5" depending which part of the brim you're measuring to.
This headpiece came to us as part of a wardrobe that was collected over many years, with most pieces having been excellently cared for and showing little wear.
