MATERIALS AND PROCESS
The leather used is a 3mm thick vegetable tanned leather sourced from the shoulder of a cow as a by-product of the meat industry. The fixings are all solid nickel and the faces are sides are finished in protective beeswax.
The belt is entirely handmade by myself using only hand tools (some of which can be seen in the photos!).
ABOUT THE LEATHER
All leather used at BowmanLeather is premium quality vegetable-tanned leather, sourced from UK tanneries. The hides are cured in natural materials such as tree bark in a process that can take several months. This is in contrast to chrome tanned leather (which makes up 90% of the industry) where hides are cured in a bath of toxic chemicals for around 1 day. Veg-tan leather is mainly done by hand in a process that is carried out by skilled artisans.
Ultimately this does mean that vegetable-tanned leather is more expensive, but the leather will have a much greater life span (and it will develop a lovely patina over time), it has a less environmental impact, and it just feels, looks and smells amazing!
