The Bering Sea is notorious for its fogs. In the age of exploration, they disoriented buy sailors and sank ships. They obscured islands from "discovery," and led some explorers to invent new islands where none existed. Even today, walking on a Bering Sea island, it is possible to lose track of yourself when fog descends, to find yourself erased, and simultaneously, to feel yourself hunted. This drawing of a man wandering on St. Matthew Island, in the middle of the Bering Sea, was inspired by the power of fog to both obscure what is there, and inspire the imagination to call forth what is not. Giclee reproduction of colored pencil and gouache over purple iris extract is 7.5"x16", signed by the artist, and suitable for framing.
