Antique English late Georgian, early Victorian buy Gilt Metal, Photographic mourning jewellery. Mourning pin 1800. Victorian Sentimental
An antique large oval shaped gilt metal mourning brooch inlaid with black enamel.
An antique large oval shaped gilt metal mourning brooch inlaid with black enamel with the word MEMORIA in Gothic gold script.
There is a lovely black and white photograph to the centre of lady which probably dates from the later Edwardian period
The brooch itself dates from the late Georgian or early Victorian period circa 1820s or 1830s
The custom of wearing mourning jewellery dates from the seventeenth century. When Prince Albert died, Queen Victoria's grief imposed mourning customs of the deepest solemnity. Most items of jewellery were made from black enamel and set with onyx, jet and "pearls for tears".
The rim to the brooch is beautifully designed in gold tone metal scroll work effect
It measures approximately 2 1/2 inches across (6 cms) x 2 1/4 inches in height (5.5 cms)
CONDITION: Reasonable condition for its age - clasp works well - good clear text - ornate decoration still outstanding. Some slight wear to the enamel to the front left hand side
A nice collectible piece of English mourning jewellery
