Bridgwood Anchor china tea set in black, white and green, trios, cake plates buy and milk jug, from the 1920s
A pretty early Art Deco Anchor china tea set with black and apple green decoration.
A pretty early Art buy Deco Anchor china tea set with black and apple green decoration, dating from the 1920s.
History:
This eye-catching tea set was made by Sampson Bridgwood & Son, of the Anchor Works in Longton, Staffordshire. By the time this tea set was made, the company had been taken over by its famous neighbours Aynsley but kept the Bridgwood name. The company used 'Anchor' as a trade name. The backstamp on this set was introduced around 1910, but this set dates to the 1920s. The pattern is called 'Elaine'.
The set consists of:
- 4 x teacups, which stand 6.7cm (2 5/8 inches) high.
- 4 x saucers, which measure 13.7cm (5 3/8 inches) in diameter.
- 4 x tea plates, which measure 18cm (7 1/8 inches) in diameter.
- 2 x cake / bread plates, which measure 22cm (8 5/8 inches) in diameter.
- 1 x milk jug, which stands 8.3cm (3 1/4 inches) high.
Description:
The set has a white background and is decorated with a hand-painted ring in black and green around the edges of each piece. The ring on the cups is on both the exterior and interior. The cup and jug handles and rims are picked out in black. The shape is simple and elegant with a definite early Art Deco style.
Condition:
The set is in good condition. There is a small hairline to one of the cups which I have shown in the photos. It measures 2cm (3/4 inch) and is clearly old as it is a little stained. There are no other chips or cracks to the set. One saucer and one larger plate have some surface crazing but the glaze has not been breached. There is a little wear to the black rims, as you can see in the photos, and a few tiny manufacturing marks here and there.
It's a stylish set, with a look that is equally at home in a modern setting.
The set weighs over 2kg before packing, hence the postage cost. I always look for the best value carrier at the time of sale and refund any postage over-payments.
