Product code: Buy Antique German or Austrian Oyster Plate c.1800's probably made by Marx & Gutherz
Research appears to indicate an Antique German or Austrian Pearled Oyster Plate c.1800's probably made by Marx & Gutherz between 1876 and 1889. There is no maker's mark on the plate. This plate has five spaces for oysters with a center spot for lemon. The original colors were White, Plum, dark shading , and a gold gilded center spiral. The colors are faded, and the gold gilding is almost gone. There is a chip on the front of the plate near an Oyster well (see photos) however, it is buy not as discolored as it appears in the photo as I photographed it under high contrast in order to get the picture. I did not even notice the chip until I was taking photos. Also, there is a dark mark on the bottom of the plate (see photos). The plate appears to be over a hundred years old and you would expect there to be some issues. It is amazing to me that something so delicate survived in its journey from overseas to the U.S. and its travel through time.
