According to the company's history, Louis Gallois set up a wine and spirits company, Gallois Cellars, on the outskirts of Paris with business partner Emmanuel Courvoisier.
The original founder's sons later took over the business and opened a new endeavour in the heart of the Cognac region in France to focus on cognac, but it was their nephews who negotiated trade into the U.K.
Marketed as "The brand of Napoleon" -- it soon earned it's place on the world stage.
Legend has it Napoleon visited the Maison Courvoisier's cellars in 1811 after tasting their wares.
