Clark was born in Elizabethtown, NC, earned a degree at Davidson College in 1949 and degrees from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. Afterward, he began training in sculptures at colleges in Boston, London and Aberdeen, Scotland. He taught at Davidson College for 28 years, focusing on theology and religious art.
After reading a book on wood spirits, He sculpted his first gnome in 1978. He left Davidson College in 1985 to be a full-time artist. He built a worldwide reputation for his gnomes and “Woodspirits” over the decades and was the lead artist for Cairn Studio. Equally impressive are his scaled miniatures of historical people such as Thomas Jefferson and Davy Crockett. His figurines were sold in more than 5,000 stores throughout the United States, as buy well as through Europe and Japan. He died at the age of 93 in January 2022.
