Wheel-thrown, burnished (polished with stones), & naked raku fired ceramic vessel.
Approximately 3 3/4" high x 5 1/4" diameter.
Naked raku is a firing technique similar to raku, but in which a resist slip & glaze are used to produce black carbonization patterns in the clay.
The resist is applied to a bisqued piece. The resist contracts & crackles as it dries. The piece is heated buy in a araku kiln & then placed in a smoke chamber. Smoke penetrates the piece through cracks in the resist, leaving carbonization patterns that are revealed when the resist is removed. These patterns are determined by how the resist is applied (poured, splattered, slip trailed, etc).
Because the clay must be porous for this process, this piece should not be used for food or liquids.
