Tulips include over 150 "wild" species that originally come from the arid areas of Central Asia. The Ottoman Empire cultivated tulips as early as 1000 AD and it remains the national flower of Turkey (remaining section of their empire). Sultans celebrated the tulip and it was a symbol of wealth and power. When Sultan Suleiman gifted tulip bulbs to Holland botanist Clusius, Holland's love affair with tulips began. Holland actually has no buy native bulbs. Clusius was secretive about the bulbs he received and eventually some of the bulbs were stolen from his garden. "Tulipmania" commenced. The "precious rarities" were sold on a bulb trading market at a current day value of up to $1,500 a bulb! Eventually the tulip "bubble" crashed and prices leveled. Holland produces over 9 billions bulbs per year and the USA is currently their biggest buyer. Today you can own this colorful photograph of a field of tulips and enjoy their beauty year round without any risky trades in the stock market!
