Rare Antique (1909)American Frontier Book 'The Trail of the Lonesome Pine' Illus. buy By F.C. Yohn in Deerhide Cover

I have paired a wonderful antiquarian book of American Frontier fiction from 1909 (now 107 years old!!!) with a vintage soft suede souvenir book cover with hand painted detailing that dates to the 1930's. As an accent piece in a country cabin, a gift for a collector of American fiction or perhaps even a movie set dec prop, it doesn't get better than this!

The book 'The Trail of the Lonesome Pine' was written by John Fox Jr. (1862-1919). He was an American journalist, novelist, short story writer and all around adventurer. 'The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come' and 'The Trail of lonesome Pine' are his best known works. Each of these two books entered the New York Times top ten list of best selling books for two years: 1903, 1904, 1908 and 1909 respectively.

'The Trail of the Lonesome Pine' was adapted for stage and screen on numerous occasions. There were 1916 and 1923 silent versions and then the highly successful 1936 version starring Henry Fonda, Fred MacMurray and Sylvia Sidney. It was directed by Henry Hathaway. It was the second full-length feature film to be shot in three-strip Technicolour and the first in buy colour to be shot outdoors, with the approval of the Technicolor Corporation. Much of it was shot at Big Bear Lake in southern California

But back to the book...Frederick Coffay Yohn (1875-1933) illustrated this volume. He was an artist and magazine illustrator whose work appeared in publications including Scribner's, Harper's Magazine and Collier's Weekly. The books he illustrated included Jack London's 'A Daughter of the Snows', Frances Hodgson Burnett's 'The Dawn of a Tomorrow' and Henry Cabot Lodge's 'Story of the American revolution'.

The story revolves around two feuding Kentucky families- the Falins and the Tollivers-with tensions rising as an outsider appears from the city interested in their properties...and one of their daughters!

This book-despite its age-is in good condition. Dust jacket is missing. All 422 pages intact. Publication date stated on title page as 1909 but was first published in October 1908. First Edition later issue. New York Scribner's Sons Publishers. Green cloth hardcover lettered in gilt on decorative front cover and spine. Frontispiece protected in guard tissue. Pages seem very gently age toned but no pen or pencil markings or tears. Six full page b/w illustrations on glossy paper.

I have encased this fine volume in a vintage suede souvenir book cover from Lake Louise Alberta. Circa 1930's. A hand painted title reads "Books are Silent Friends' above a painting of a black bear in the pines against a full yellow moon. A long strip of suede serves as a handy book-mark. You certainly can't argue that these two are 'just meant for each other'!
