Enjoy our practical carry-all book bag with patch made authentic Bogolan (mudcloth )from Djenne, Mali, in West Africa. The golden and rust earth buy tones of this fabric resemble the four color pigments of ancient mudcloth: black, white, rust, and mustard yellow.
PLEASE NOTE: Slight variation in colors and patterns may occur in this handcrafted product.
About our artists:
Women artists hand-dyed your Bogolan piece using organic dyes and traditional techniques of the Bamanan people of Mali. The geometric motifs represent the "language" of Bogolan, created centuries ago by Malian women. Older women traditionally pass the symbolic language down to younger generations.
Artisans belonging to the Tanti Bogolan Women's Association who made this textile are struggling to survive in the cultural heritage site of Djenne. Women used to sell their Bogolan to tourists, but now the threat of terrorism scares tourists away from visiting this ancient city and Timbuktu. Your purchase supports poverty alleviation, school fees, and textile heritage preservation.
We use flat rate world wide shipping to make it easy. Please let us know if you need another shipping option. We keep it simple to keep shipping costs as low as possible.
