Antique Victorian Gold buy Filled Banded Agate Oval Brooch Pin #c108

This lovely antique Victorian brooch features a large oval banded agate stone that has been set into a gold-filled bezel setting. The setting around the stone has a rope edging detail and it is open back, allowing maximum light through to highlight the fabulous stone. The stone has a beveled edge and it exhibits glorious bands of black, brown, white and caramel buy colors. The brooch has an old-style c catch clasp and a tube hinge pin back. The pin extends beyond the brooch, which was typical of mid-1800's jewelry construction. It is superb!

The brooch measures about 1 9/16 inches long, 1 7/16 inches wide and weighs 12.4 grams. The piece is unsigned, which was typical of this period.

These wonderful agate brooches were popular in the mid-1800s and were influenced by Queen Victoria's trips to Scotland. Mary Lincoln was very fond of her agate brooches and frequently wore them, which has been captured in many pictures of her. These brooches are fantastic pieces of history and make great additions to antique jewelry collections! The brooch looks great worn on a suit lapel, but would also look stunning worn at the neckline of a pretty blouse. The brooch is in excellent vintage condition. The finish is in very nice condition and the c clasp and pin back work properly and hold securely. The only issue I could find at all with the piece is a tiny bend to the pin at the very end. It is minor and doesn't detract at all from the beauty or functionality of this exquisite brooch. It's such a marvelous find! Please note that the the agate stone will look darker against clothing than it does when off and illuminated by bright light.
