Wood Carving Knife in Scottish Burr Wych Elm and Yew, leather knife, mens gift, buy sloyd knife
I have been carving small pieces of wood for a few years now, just for fun and always love to see how a piece develops. I usually carve either geometric designs or birds. I use the same Laurin Metalli blade as i have used in this knife. Made in Finland from X50CRMoV15 Stainless steel. This steel is know for holding a wicked edge, has excellent rust resistance and is easy to sharpen. It is absolutely designed to be used and having put it through its paces with my softest and hardest woods i can vouch on its suitability for the job. This blade has a super sharp, fine point that is perfect for doing intricate detail work.
I have made the primary outer handle from some nicely figured Scottish Burr Wych Elm. One of my favourite local woods, mid browns, tones of cream, yellow and green with a golden iridescence and an intricate burr grain pattern. I harvested the burr that i used for this knife from a tree in Balmacara, West Coast of Scotland beside the Isle of Skye and have been waiting for it to dry for a few years now. I have used perhaps over a hundred burrs in my time and this one stood out due to the very clearly defined lighter sapwood to darker heartwood, quite a rare thing indeed. It makes for a stunning contrast and the sapwood has its own tones of iridescence. The green really pops in this burr and has a pearlescent sheen to it.
For a professional finish i have used some local Scottish Yew as a centre to lock the knife tang and the outer scales together. This particular piece came from an old tree that grew very near Ullapool, West Coast of Scotland. Yew is a very traditional and sought after wood in woodcraft. This extremely slow growing, evergreen tree can live for many thousands of years and its use in folklore and legend has given it an almost mystical status. It has a warm orange heartwood with a creamy sapwood. This is my most popular wood combination and so was an easy choice for this knife handle. It makes for an eye-catching and unique knife.
The knife weighs 30 grams and comes with a black leather sheath.
Handle Length 110mm x Width 24mm x Depth 11mm
Blade Length 41mm x Width 13mm
Due to the fact that i think this knife will be well used, i have opted against my usual Polyurethane finish. It would make the knife more difficult to grip under certain conditions and the polyurethane would chip from coming into contact with the work surface. I have given the wood 3 coats of Shellac and Cellulose thinners and then applied 2 types of Industrial wax. This gives a finish not unlike a Polyurethane finish. For easy maintenance apply any wood or even vegetable oil when the wood feels dry.
This knife is suitable for both novice and professional wood and leather workers.
