Three hares share three ears, yet each has two: this enigmatic symbol, something of a puzzle or "strange loop" in itself, has an equally puzzling and ancient history. The Chasing Hares have appeared in artwork ranging from sixth-century China through the Middle East and all the way to southwest England and Wales, where they can be found on the bosses of church ceilings and in stained-glass windows. The symbol may have been passed along by merchants as they followed the Silk Road, but each culture has invested it with its own meaning.
In Buddhism, the Chasing Hares may have signified peace and tranquility; in Judaism, the hares became a symbol of the diaspora. In the Earth-based religions of Celtic Europe and Great Britain, the three hares were strongly connected to fertility and fecundity, and may have been a symbol of the goddess Ostara, or Eostre - from whose name we get the word "Easter." In Christian churches, where the Chasing Hares often appear along with the Green Man, they have come to symbolize spiritual purity, the Trinity, and the Virgin Mary.
My rendition of the Chasing Hares shows three sleek rabbits captured in mid-bound, forming an equilateral triangle. The pendant is cast in solid sterling silver from a painstakingly hand-carved wax original, and each one is oxidized and hand-finished to a high shine.
• Pendant measures a little over 1" high (26 mm)
• Available with 20" sterling rolo chain or 2 mm leather cord with sterling clasp
• Cast in sterling silver from a hand-carved original model
PACKAGING AND SHIPPING INFO:
https://www.etsy.com/shop/SilverspotStudio#policies
INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS: Please note that orders shipped to countries outside of the United States may be subject to import taxes, customs duties, and fees levied by the government of the destination country. You may be required to pay these charges upon delivery of your order.
Customs policies vary widely from country to country and buy are subject to frequent changes, so you may want to check with your local customs office for more information before ordering. Also, customs procedures may cause delays beyond the estimated delivery date. I cannot guarantee delivery of international orders by a specific date. Although most orders arrive within 7 to 14 days, I strongly recommend allowing at least 21 days for delivery and customs clearance if you need your order in time for a special occasion.
The full value of the order will be declared on the customs form. Please note that I cannot mark the item as a "gift"; this is not possible when using Etsy's shipping system, and it is a violation of Federal law.
I have no control over, or any way of predicting, the customs fees and procedures of the destination country.
Thanks for your understanding, and I truly appreciate your business!
