Created with the ancestral Japanese technique in one of our partner workshops in South Africa, the contemporary expression of these raku, shows the nobility of these ceramics obtain through the magic of fire! During the second firing, the ceramic is taken out of the kiln at 1000°, crackles during the thermal shock, then ignites when it comes into buy contact with the sawdust in which it is immersed. The smoke then seeps into the cracks in the glaze, and the unglazed parts are charred. The ceramic is then carefully brushed to reveal its beauty.
The "raku" glazing technique developed in Japan in the 16th century was mainly related to the manufacture of bowls for the ritual tea ceremony. Today's contemporary raku is an adaptation of the traditional raku methods, and is still highly valued for the unique character it reveals through this rapid low-temperature double firing.
